NQ.com:
What advice would you give to people who have just passed their final accountancy exams?

Sinead:
I think that when you become qualified, it is a great time to assess your contentment in your current role, as passing your exams definitely open more doors career wise. I would probably advise that even if you are not actively looking for a new position elsewhere, it is a good idea to be aware of the types of roles available in the market.

In saying that, it very much depends on an individual's situation. If a person is relatively happy in their current role and feel as if they are being adequately rewarded for what they do, then I don't see the requirement for them to feel they have to make a career move. I personally felt however that passing my finals gave me the kick-start I needed into beginning the search for a new position.

NQ.com:
Why did you make the career decisions you did once you became newly qualified?

Sinead:
The company I was working for at the time was going through a period of change, to a mainly process focused set up. I knew that there were going to be few opportunities to develop in this environment for a newly qualified accountant.

I also wanted a new challenge and felt that it was the right time to move. And I chose my current role, mostly because I never thought I would be able to work for this company outside London.

NQ.com:
What does your current role entail?

Sinead:
I am responsible for a project that has been set up in order to do some transition work from the London office to our Glasgow office. The work involves reviewing complex trades. If the London-Glasgow transition is successful, this could lead to more scope globally.

NQ.com:
What do you enjoy most about your current role?

Sinead:
The thing I enjoy most is that this role is completely different from anything I have ever done before. The role is generally more varied; there is a lot less number crunching and I am gaining the project and management skills I have never had the chance to experience before.
